Eczema Treatment in Ayurveda

Eczema is a condition where patches of skin become inflamed, itchy, red, cracked, and rough. Blisters may sometimes occur. Often called as Dermatitis, Eczema is a term for a group of medical conditions that causes the skin to become inflamed or irritated

Symptoms

Eczema signs and symptoms can vary from person to person. Common signs and symptoms include:

  • Dry, sensitive skin

  • Red, inflamed skin

  • Very bad itching

  • Dark colored patches of skin

  • Rough, leathery or scaly patches of skin

  • Oozing or crusting

  • Areas of swelling

Different types of Eczema

1. Atopic Dermatitis – Commonest form of dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (eczema) signs and symptoms vary widely from person to person and include:

  • Dry skin

  • Itching, which may be severe, especially at night . Raw, sensitive, swollen skin from scratching

  • Red to brownish-grey patches, especially on the hands, feet, ankles, wrists, neck, upper chest, eyelids, inside the bend of the elbows and knees, and in infants, the face and scalp

  • Small, raised bumps, which may leak fluid and crust over when scratched

  • Thickened, cracked, scaly skin

In infants below 2 years of age normally suffer from Rashes which are commonly on the scalp and cheeks. These rashes can cause extreme itchiness which may interfere with sleeping. Continuous rubbing and scratching can lead to skin infections.

2Irritant Contact Dermatitis:  develops as a result of contact with substances that directly damage or irritate the skin like when anyone comes in contact with some poisonous plants or chemicals. Everybody who comes in contact with those irritants will have allergy.

3. Allergic contact Dermatitis – develops when an individual becomes sensitized or allergic to something in the environment. Like some people will have allergy to Gold Ornaments while other will have with artificial jewelry have allergy with hair dye and some will have
allergy to washing powders. Some will have allergy but others will not have allergy with those items.

4. Seborrheic Dermatitis – Seborrheic dermatitis is a common scaly rash that often affects the face, scalp, and chest, but it can affect other areas. It is a condition which appears in those areas of the skin with large numbers of grease (sebaceous) glands, such as the scalp and sides of the nose. Sometime patients confuse it with Dandruff.

5. Dyshidrotic eczema- Marked by small blisters on the hands and feet, especially the fingers, palms, and soles. It can be very itchy and will often disrupt sleep and work time.

6. Hand eczema – Eczema that only affects your hands. You may get this type if you work, where you regularly use chemicals that irritate the skin like sweeper, working in a chemical factory, beauty parlour etc.

7. Neurodermatitis or lichen simplex chronicus is a skin disorder in which the skin becomes irritated, causing chronic itching and uncontrollable scratching. The cycle of itching and scratching causes the skin to thicken and become scaly

8. Nummular eczema This type of eczema causes round, coin-shaped spots to form on your skin

9. Stasis dermatitis – Known also as venous eczema and gravitational dermatitis, this type of skin condition is caused by a circulation problem, often with the veins in the legs. Symptoms usually start with swelling around the ankle, varicose veins, or changes in colour of the skin.

Two stages of eczema

Wet eczema and dry eczema are not two different diseases but are the stages of the disease. Before dry it could be wet stage.

1. Wet eczema – It is normally the acute or sub-acute stage of Eczema. Oedema with wet scales, sometimes watery discharges from the patch. Chances of secondary infection is possible.

2. Dry eczema – It is normally the chronic stage of Eczema. Normally associated with Lichenification.


Ayurvedic treatment for Eczema

In Ayurveda this disease is described as Vicharchika. As per Ayurveda all skin diseases are caused by Vitiation of three dosha- Vata, Pitta and kapha but symptoms vary as per the predominance of dosha. For example Imbalance of Vata Dosha causes dryness, hardness, coarseness, pain and blackish discoloration in the lesion. Pitta aggravation causes Burning sensation, reddish coloration, exudation and infection. Kapha aggravation will be associated with itching, thickness of the skin, oozing and whitish discoloration of the skin.
